“Look at the sky. We are not alone. The whole universe is friendly to us and conspires only to give the best to those who dream and work.”

-A. P. J. Abdul Kalam

Keeping pace with our pledge of an extended outdoor classroom to our bright Xaverians and to quench their scholastic curiosity, the St. Xavier’s High School organised a field trip of Grade II to the Nehru Planetarium on Saturday, 22nd December 2018. It was a really educative as well as gratifying experience for the students under vigilant supervision of their Class Teacher, Sports In-Charge and a Medical Practitioner.

Planetariums are domed theatres that project images of the starry sky and countless spectacular objects we find in our universe, creating educational experiences that teach astronomy and related sciences. By showing the fascinating discoveries in astronomy and space exploration, planetariums are a major tool in increasing science literacy. Many of today's leading scientists chose their careers because they were captivated by the experience of a planetarium visit.

The students visited the Nehru Planetarium in New Delhi, situated in the green surroundings of the Teen Murti House, earlier the official residence of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru and now a museum in his memory. Nehru Planetarium is now a wing of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library. The students were fascinated by the memorabilia  among other exhibits at the library, museum as well as the last residences of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Smt. Indira Gandhi and Mahatma Gandhi and felt honoured to get a glimpse of their life.

They, then, were escorted to the planetarium where they were shown a presentation on the famous astronauts of India, including the first Indian astronaut to travel in space Mr. Rakesh Sharma and his spacecraft.

The students were over joyed and were really inquisitive about the world's astronomy classrooms and centres of Public Science Education that have served perhaps a billion people during the past century. Observing the vast universe, stars, constellations, galaxies left the young Xaverians awestruck. Being an astronaut and scientist or an engineer who designs a telescope or a spacecraft became the career goals for them, as they gazed intently at the marvels of universe, highlighting the significance of space research during the formative years of a student’s knowledge acquisition.

“Books constitute capital. A library book lasts as long as a house, for hundreds of years. It is not, then, an article of mere consumption but fairly of capital, and often in the case of professional men, setting out in life, it is their only capital.”

    -Thomas Jefferson

To enable Xaverians be more creative and productive in the library, St. Xavier’s High School conducted a Library Week from 17th December to 21st December 2018 under the supervision of the librarian. The students made constructive use of their innovative skills and knowledge they gained from the library in a fun and pragmatic way.

The Library Week was comprised of a well-designed and co-ordinated line-up of activities like quizzes, crosswords, puzzles etc. The students got an opportunity to express their poetic streak through the innovative ‘Poem in Your Pocket’ activity where students had to come up with a poem inspired by a book or a character of their favourite book. They diligently penned down rhymes to pleasantly gladden the faculty members. During the ‘Design a Bookmark or Book Jacket’ activity, they discovered the creative genius lying dormant within them. On the other hand, the quizzes and puzzles gave them an opportunity to assess how well they had resourcefully utilised the library books.

It was really a self-revelation for most of the Xaverians who were captivated by their own expressive and creative skills as well as knowledge gained through their submergence into the fascinating world of books. The activities proved extremely helpful in developing the reading, knowledge acquisition and vocabulary building skills as well as realisation of their potential. St. Xavier’s High School humbly with its staff, faculty and students strives tirelessly to make learning as stimulating and easily comprehensible for our students as possible.

A flock of birds chirping in their natural environment is an experience soothing to the ears and pleasant to the eyes. This enchanting experience was tapped to extend the learning of inquisitive and curious Xavierians beyond the walls of the classroom. The students of grades III & V visited Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary on December 12, 2018. It is one of the most popular bird sanctuaries in India, situated in Haryana. The students braced themselves with a spectacular view of both resident and migratory birds which complemented and brought alive the learning of the students beyond their textbooks.

The beauties of the nature along with lifelong learning enthralled the students on this field trip. The excursion was really informative and also sensitized the students towards the pristine beauty of the nature.
